In celebration of World Teachers Day on October 5th, we are shining a spotlight on Tr. Christine from Furaha Preparatory School, who has dedicated 20 years of her life to shaping young minds. When we spoke with a few students, many of them shared that Tr. Christine is their favorite teacher. Curious about why she thought this was the case, we asked her. Her response? Longevity. Tr. Christine, a Grade Three teacher, has had the unique privilege of journeying with many of her students from preschool, offering them consistent guidance, care, and inspiration at every stage. Reflecting on her 20-year teaching career, she speaks about her role with both passion and a deep sense of purpose.
“I became a teacher because I love children,” Tr. Christine shared when asked about her motivation to join the profession. This love and dedication to her students have been evident throughout her career. Beyond just imparting knowledge, Tr. Christine believes that “a teacher is a role model,” shaping the lives of students far beyond the classroom. She draws personal inspiration from her father, who was her first teacher and role model.
Her relationship with her students is mutually enriching. “The students have molded me to become a better person,” she said. “They cheer me up even when I am having a difficult time.” One of the students even expressed the desire to become a teacher one day, inspired by Tr. Christine’s nurturing yet disciplined approach. “As much as I love them, I am also strict,” she explained. “When I need to be, I am strict, so I am both warm and serious and the students appreciate that approach”
Her dream for her students is clear: “My dream for my students is for them to excel in life.” Seeing former students come back and thrive in various careers is a highlight for Tr. Christine, a testament to the lasting impact of the work they all do at Furaha Preparatory School in Huruma.
Speaking on the school uniform program, she expressed her gratitude: “You have done a commendable job giving school uniforms to our students. The parents were very happy to receive the gifts. Covering some of these essential items like uniforms makes such a big difference.”
Tr. Christine’s story is one of passion, resilience, and love for her students. She continues to inspire and uplift, one child at a time. World Teachers Day reminds us of the critical role teachers play in shaping society. Like Tr. Christine, teachers are more than educators—they are role models who guide, encourage, and support students through pivotal moments, helping them take bold steps, nurturing talents and helping them to learn new concepts.
Happy World Teachers Day to all the incredible educators who are making a difference every day!
