FAQs

About Tailored for Education

Why should I donate to Tailored for Education?
We believe education is a fundamental human right and that the lack of a school uniform should not stand in the way. Our mission is simple- we increase school enrollment and create economic opportunity by providing the world’s most vulnerable children with locally made school uniforms. Increased income coupled with educated residents has the power to transform entire communities. We have a low-cost but extremely high impact program that is easy to scale. Through education we can end the cycle of poverty.

Are you affiliated with any other organizations? How do you coordinate to avoid duplication?
We are! It has always been extremely important for us to leverage the synergies of other organizations doing supplemental work. We have 15 partners in eight countries who are providing crucial interventions that increase our students’ chance of success. Examples include teacher training, meal programs, sanitation and hygiene resources, gender-based violence prevention training and empowerment curriculum. We consider our partners an extension of our team, as they are our eyes and ears on the ground responsible for identifying schools with students in need of uniforms as well as the local tailors we employ to make the required attire. Our partnerships allow us to develop long-term relationships with the schools and tailors benefiting from our collaborative work and are essential for us to understand the long term impact of our programming.

Impact and Transparency

How can I verify your organization’s legitimacy?
Tailored for Education is registered 501(c)3, is registered with the nonprofit division of the State of Massachusetts, our financials are audited by an independent accounting firm each year and we have high rated profiles on both Guidestar/Candid and Charity Navigator which confirm that we are in good standing with the IRS.

What are the measurable outcomes of your uniform program?
In our 14 years of programming together with our partners, we have seen that receiving free uniforms impacts school attendance, absenteeism, academic performance, and the livelihoods of those living and working in the communities where we work. While no study can directly tie the provision of a free uniform to an increase in academic performance, we know that uniforms instill a sense of confidence in young people – particularly in girls. It is this confidence, and a sense of security that we believe can level the playing field for the most vulnerable children across the world.

We measure the success of our work by collecting the following data:

  • School enrollment
  • School attendance
  • Absenteeism rates and reasons reported for absences
  • Exam scores
  • Dropout rates
  • Transition rates (primary to secondary and secondary to University)
  • Self esteem metrics
  • Confidence in the classroom
  • Number of tailors provided with employment
  • Success of Parent Contribution Funds

Volunteer Opportunities

What volunteer opportunities are available?
At the moment we don’t have any hands-on volunteer opportunities but sharing our mission and work and fundraising for us are the best ways you can help us provide more school uniforms.

Can I fundraise for TFE?
Yes, please do! Through our giving platform it is very easy to fundraise as an individual or create a team for others to join. See here and please email info@tailoredforeducation.org if you have any questions! We welcome all creative ideas to raise funds for school uniforms! We have had donors successfully fundraise for us by asking for donations in lieu of birthday gifts, hosting school dress down days, throwing cocktail parties and dinners, participating in golf marathons and running marathons and 5ks.

Program Specific Questions

What are the eligibility criteria for your uniform program?
We have a thorough vetting process for organizations requesting partnership and currently have a very long waitlist. Four preliminary criterion prior to the official vetting process are:

  • Partners must work in communities where uniforms are mandatory for attendance.
  • Partners must be providing another intervention crucial to the well being and success of the children we serve.
  • Local tailors must be employed to make the uniforms.
  • There must be a willingness to implement our Parent Contribution Fund program, which supports making improvements to the schools.

Do you provide uniforms in the United States?
At this time we do not provide uniforms in the United States but welcome the opportunity should it present itself.
