In Mombasa, school communities came together around a shared purpose: helping children enter the classroom ready to learn. Through our partnership with Dignitas, in June we distributed 1,151 school uniforms to students in four schools across the coastal city. Over several days, we saw what happens when schools, families, partners, and communities come together around a shared goal. Children walked into classrooms with new confidence. Parents gathered with pride and relief. Teachers spoke about what becomes possible when learners feel ready to participate fully in school.

For families with limited resources, a school uniform can carry a significant cost. When that cost is reduced, a child’s path to education becomes more secure. Receiving a uniform helps a child arrive at school feeling prepared, included and proud to be there.

One parent shared the weight of that change clearly: “When you enter the classroom with confidence, how you feel changes. There is so much you have done for us that we may not be able to explain. You have lifted us to a level where we have strength to pursue even more for our children.”

That strength matters, in many communities, parents are doing everything they can to support their children’s education while navigating difficult financial choices. Parents want to see their children attending school consistently, learning well, pursuing their goals and having room to imagine a future beyond the challenges their families may face today. Our role is to work alongside them, schools, and trusted partners to remove a barrier to education. A uniform may seem simple, but in the life of a learner, it can shape attendance, confidence, belonging, and the way a child sees their place in the classroom.

This is why partnership is central to our work. In Mombasa, Dignitas has been working with teachers to strengthen classroom learning and improve the experience students have once they arrive at school. Their work with educators, combined with our focus on uniforms, creates a fuller circle of support around the learner.

As Steve, the CEO of Dignitas shared during one of the uniform distributions in Mombasa, “The learners will now get to shine inside and out.” That statement captured the heart of the moment. A child needs more than access to a classroom. They need a learning environment where they are encouraged, teachers who are equipped, parents who support them, and practical resources that help them show up with dignity. When these pieces come together, education becomes a real opportunity to learn, dream, and succeed.

We also saw how one act of support can create collective action. When families see that a goal is within reach, it builds momentum. Parents begin to imagine what else may be possible for their children. Teachers see learners stepping into class with renewed agency and children begin to connect school with their own dreams for the future.

Our work is grounded in the belief that children should have access to the practical support they need to attend school and learn with confidence. It is also grounded in partnership, listening to communities, working closely with local organisations and schools, and responding to the realities families describe. We are grateful to Dignitas, the schools, parents and all the communities who made this milestone possible. Together, we are helping create the conditions for students to learn, pursue their goals and shape the futures they want for themselves and their communities.
