A Full Circle of Impact

At Tailored for Education, our goal is to ensure every child has access to education so they can pursue their dreams and thrive. Together with our partners, we help students overcome barriers and achieve their goals. But what does this impact look like in the long-term? We see our collective impact through stories like Beverly’s.

Beverly attended primary school at one of Dignitas’ partner schools in the Mathare community. After graduating, she was selected as a Dottie Scholar, a high school scholarship program run by Dignitas that supports bright young girls from marginalized communities. For Beverly, this opportunity was life-changing, not only for her but for her entire family. It meant she could attend school without worrying about school fees and leaving behind some of the challenges of growing up in an informal settlement. She also credits the leadership program included in the scholarship program for building her skills and confidence.

Fast forward to today: Beverly is now a Programs Assistant at Dignitas. Since starting her role in February, she’s focused on student support initiatives, helping distribute storybooks, coordinating the Dottie Scholarship program she once benefited from, and working on Tailored for Education’s uniform distribution projects.

Beverly spends a lot of time in schools, hearing firsthand how uniforms are making a difference. She recalls students receiving new shoes after years of wearing torn ones, and others getting a complete school uniform for the first time. One moment that stands out for her is a student from Carson Primary School, who had never owned a full set of new uniforms. On distribution day, receiving a new shirt, shorts, sweater, socks, and shoes meant the world to that child. “Most of the children have never worn new shoes. Right now, their biggest need is shoes. Providing these uniforms really motivates them. It makes me feel like I’m making a difference,” she shares.

For Beverly, this role is about service. She jokes that the salary is a nice motivation as well, but what truly drives her is the impact she is making. “I was once a Dottie Scholar. I know what it feels like to lack. So the fact that I’m able to give a child something they need—it reminds me of myself. And that gives me the motivation, knowing that this child will receive just as I did.”

Beyond her work with uniform distribution, Beverly is also growing personally and professionally. “I’m learning how to interact with people, how to work with others and to be detail oriented. Emotional intelligence is definitely one of the top lessons,” she explains. She loves that Dignitas is people-centered and inclusive, and she feels trusted with the responsibilities she has been given. One of her proudest moments so far is completing uniform distributions to 38 schools in three months. She describes that it took dedication, planning, and coordination with many stakeholders to make this happen.

Looking ahead, Beverly plans to continue her role while completing her university studies. She’s currently a third-year Accounting and Finance student, resuming classes next year. With all she has accomplished so far, this is just the beginning for her—and for many other students whose lives are transformed by access to education.

Providing uniforms may seem like a small act, but its effects are far-reaching. From the joy on students’ faces when they receive their new uniforms to the increased confidence, better school attendance, and improved engagement in the classroom, the ripple effects of this work continue long into the future. These students will grow up to shape their communities and the world around them.
