  • 90% of the population lives in rural areas
  • More than half of Malawians live below the poverty line making it one of the least developed countries in the world.
  • Only 25% of secondary school aged children are enrolled in school
  • The HIV and AIDS pandemic continues to grow, killing tens of thousands of Malawians each year. The HIV prevalence rate is more than 11 percent; over 900,000 people in the country are living with the disease. More than 550,000 children have lost one or both of their parents to HIV and AIDS.
  • 4.2% of GDP is spent on education
  • 13% of children are underweight
  • Average number of years of education: 9
Partners in Health – Summer 2012

Through our partnership with Partners in Health we provided uniforms to 200 secondary school children. We additionally provided school supplies to 1,580 children in primary school. This is a deviation from our other projects; however, without the school supplies, these children will never complete primary school.
